The University of Toronto Alt Protein Project is a chapter of a global student movement established by the Good Food Institute dedicated to transforming universities into engines for alternative protein education, research, and innovation. Leveraging our location in the dynamic Toronto area, we aim to raise awareness and create a vibrant community around the alternative protein field. Our mission is to host educational events featuring industry leaders and experts to spark scientific inquiry and innovation. As a leading research university, UofT is already home to research projects and emerging startups in plant-based proteins, cultivated meat, and precision fermentation. Despite this extensive research ecosystem, there is a notable lack of community support to synergize these efforts. Our chapter seeks to bridge this gap by cultivating a collaborative environment, creating educational programs, and establishing a talent pipeline, and by doing so becoming a cornerstone of the alternative protein ecosystem and a beacon for sustainability.
