Housing Our University Students Equitably or HOUSE, is a non-profit housing organization that builds and operates affordable student housing on or near post-secondary campuses.
HOUSE was founded by student housing activists and incorporated in 2021. We are owned/operated by student unions via member chapters across teh GTA, with hopes to expand further across English Canada.
Our unique approach aims to mobilize social finance tools to build non-profit housing projects. We follow a tried and tested building model inspired and advised by the Quebecois-based non-profit developer UTILE, who has raised over $500 million dollars to develop affordable student housing in Quebec.
We also work in collaboration with post-secondary institutions, real estate and government sectors to develop this housing and direct the projects from beginning to end, in the process, raising awareness through advocacy projects and engaging in research about the critical need and demand for affordable housing for students to ensure a sustainable and equitable future.
By joining the UofT chapter, you can expect to be part of a movement creating real solutions to the student housing crisis. As a member of our executive or board of directors, you’ll work alongside student unions, community partners, and housing experts to learn about what it takes to build and operate affordable, non-profit housing near campuses. You’ll gain hands-on experience in advocacy, research, project development, and social finance, learning about various governance models (e.g., co-operative housing) while contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for students. Together, we’re proving that students, the users of our future projects, can lead the way in transforming housing.
