Hart House Student Social Justice Committee St George

The Hart House Student Social Justice Committee is dedicated to providing University of Toronto students with opportunities to learn about, engage with, and collaboratively champion social justice advocacy at the local and global scale.

Our pillars of social justice include spreading awareness, fostering dialogue, building advocacy-centered community, and collaborating with student groups, institutions, and community organizations to empower the next generation of leaders. New members, volunteers and partnerships are always welcome!

Some of our programming includes:

  • Collaborative events with social justice-driven student groups across the University of Toronto’s three campuses;
  • Academic panels, presentations, and small group discussions;
  • Community-based volunteering opportunities;
  • The Research Analysts Program connected to the Advocacy to Action Journal as an opportunity for University of Toronto students to critically analyze and bring to light social justice issues they care about.

We recently published the Advocacy to Action (A2A) journal, as the first edition of our annual publication.

The Advocacy to Action (A2A) journal is a compilation of research conducted by student analysts on critical social justice topics to spread awareness, foster dialogue, and call for action on these issue areas. Throughout the academic year, the committee works with Research Analysts and Editors-in-Chief who are interested and/or actively involved in the social movement/politics of a country. Published once a year, the purpose of the journal is to amplify student voices on global or local issues that students are passionate about.

In these pages, readers will encounter diverse student perspectives on topics that affect marginalized communities as well as the lives of the population as a whole – ranging from the crisis of Islamophobia in Canada to gender and economic sanctions in Iran. To acknowledge each analyst’s unique personal background and perspective on the issue they chose to address, the journal also includes positionality statements. Each article brings attention to a social justice issue in different parts of the world, helping us expand our understanding of the injustices that occur every day and point out what students and policymakers can do to tackle them.
