AICIA UofT AI 101 Session: Modern AI LandscapeSt George

September 9 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

https://meet.google.com/ejh-xmbu-snj

AI 101 is the starting point for students who want to understand modern AI and learn how to use it effectively and responsibly.

In this interactive introductory session, we will explore the major types of AI students are encountering today, including language models, reasoning-oriented AI, multimodal systems, agents, image generation, and video/creative AI.

Rather than focusing on memorizing individual tools, the session will help you develop a practical framework for deciding which AI capability fits a problem, what context the AI needs, what can go wrong, and how to verify the result.

We will cover:

  • The modern AI landscape and major AI capability families
  • What language models and generative AI are good at
  • Reasoning, multimodal AI, agents, image generation, and video AI
  • Real-world AI products and how to choose the right tool for a task
  • The AI Collaboration Window — understanding what you know, what the AI knows, and when more context is needed
  • Common AI failure modes, including hallucinations and false confidence
  • Human verification and responsible AI use
  • Practical examples and a short hands-on exercise

No previous AI experience is required. Students from all programs and levels of technical experience are welcome.

By the end of the session, you should be able to:

  • identify major AI capabilities
  • choose a suitable AI approach for a real problem
  • recognize important risks and limitations
  • evaluate and verify AI-generated outputs
  • identify a practical next step for developing your AI skills
