The Canadian Association of Latin Medical Students (CALMS) at the University of Toronto was formed to bring together and foster a community of medical students of Latin American heritage, as well as all students, regardless of ethnic or educational background, who are interested in Latin culture and health. The group aims to address issues related to the under-representation of Latin medical students in Canada and support their transition from learners to medical professionals through interprofessional networking. CALMS also aims to increase the knowledge and understanding among medical students of all backgrounds of social determinants of health related to the Latin American population across Canada. By accomplishing these goals, CALMS ultimately strives to improve the healthcare that Canada’s significant Hispanic and Latin American communities receive.
