illuminaite academy: A student-led collective exploring AI, ethics, and society.

Our mission is to cultivate a thoughtful, interdisciplinary community dedicated to exploring the ethical, societal, and safety-related dimensions of computer science (CS) and artificial intelligence (AI). We believe that shaping the future of these technologies requires diverse perspectives—not only from technical disciplines, but also from fields like philosophy, social science, health, law, and the arts.

We aim to empower students from all programs to engage meaningfully with the complex questions surrounding AI. Through accessible programming—including workshops, guest speakers, and our flagship annual UofT AI Ethics Competition—we help students build the intellectual tools and collaborative networks needed to responsibly influence the trajectory of technological development. Since 2020, we have hosted events with over 1000 students participating, ranging from ages 10 to 50, joining from 42 cities and 11 countries.
