Stem cell transplantation is a critical treatment for over 80 blood diseases, including various types of blood cancer. Since stem cell matches are based on shared genetic markers, the best potential match typically comes from a sibling. However, the likelihood of finding a compatible sibling donor is only 25%, meaning the vast majority of patients rely on the stem cell registry to find a suitable match.
When searching for a donor outside the family, the chances of finding a compatible match are higher if the donor shares the same ethnic background. Unfortunately, only 32% of stem cell registrants come from ethnically diverse backgrounds, which significantly reduces the chances of a successful match for patients with non-Caucasian ancestry.
OtherHalf (www.chinesestemcell.ca) is affiliated with the Canadian Blood Services and is dedicated to addressing this disparity by increasing ethnic diversity within Canada’s stem cell donor database, with a particular focus on the Chinese Canadian community. Through targeted stem cell drives and educational campaigns, we aim to promote health equity and ensure that all individuals in need of a stem cell transplant have an equal opportunity to find a life-saving donor.
