The Ottoman and Post-Ottoman Studies Student Association at the University of Toronto (OPSA) is a student group dedicated to fostering an interdisciplinary academic community for Ottoman and post-Ottoman studies at the University of Toronto. OPSA supports the study of the Ottoman Empire and its afterlives in post-Ottoman societies by fostering scholarly exchange, enhancing research and teaching, and fostering connections among students, faculty, and researchers across departments and programs.
Grounded in the necessity of interdisciplinary work, OPSA fosters sustained dialogue among history, archaeology, art history, literature, and linguistics across Ottoman and post-Ottoman geographies. The Association organizes regular academic programming, including reading groups, workshops, guest lectures, roundtables, and showcases of graduate/undergraduate research. OPSA also promotes the study of material culture, including objects, architecture, landscapes, infrastructure, and everyday artifacts, as historical evidence, and encourages collaboration between archival research and object-based, visual, and spatial methods.
OPSA is committed to providing a participatory forum characterized by intellectual openness and mutual respect. The Association prioritizes plural viewpoints, foregrounds historically marginalized voices, and promotes critical inquiry into how histories are produced, contested, and remembered. Membership is free and accessible, with voting rights reserved for registered University of Toronto students. Non-voting membership is open to staff, faculty, alumni, and external participants, in accordance with the constitution.
