STEP (Strategies for Transitioning and Excelling in Programs) is an initiative by a group of driven individuals within the University of Toronto St. George campus to facilitate the transition of students into university life. To combat the difficulties of first-year transitioning, research-backed accountability partner systems are used to connect individuals with other first-year students to increase the likelihood of goal development and execution. Through accountability partners, students have a friend or peer to hold them accountable and create a safe outlet for discussion about adapting to university life.
This program was designed with the issues first-year students face in mind. Namely, imposter syndrome, mispredicting the feasibility of tasks, and lack of information on goal setting and organization. Educational workshops and events on personalized study strategies, habit formation techniques, and well-being are also provided to university students throughout the year.
STEP prides itself on the vast knowledge across many areas of academic studies that diverse executive members bring. This allows for students in all types of programs to gain advice tailored to their academic route.
