STEP (Student Transition & Empowerment Program) is a student-led initiative based at the University of Toronto – St. George campus that supports students in navigating the academic, social, and personal challenges of transitioning into university life. Founded by a team of dedicated peers, STEP uses a research-backed Accountability Partner System to pair students with fellow first-years, fostering mutual support, goal-setting, and a sense of community.
STEP was created with real first-year struggles in mind — including imposter syndrome, task mismanagement, and lack of clarity around academic habits — and also directly addresses loss of accountability, gaps in educational preparedness, and the impact of socioeconomic differences on student success. Through interactive academic workshops, mental health seminars, and recognition events, we aim to not only provide tools for success but also bridge educational and motivational disparities among students.
In our founding year, we hosted multiple events to educate and uplift students, including custom workshops on study strategies, seminars on well-being and habit formation, and award ceremonies to recognize outstanding participants in our system. Testimonials from participants showed that STEP significantly improved their confidence, consistency, and university adjustment experience — earning the club five nominations for University of Toronto Student Life Awards.
With a diverse executive team representing various academic disciplines, STEP ensures that students from all programs receive tailored, accessible, and inclusive guidance. Whether you’re looking for a supportive peer, practical tools, or a welcoming space to grow, STEP is here to help you thrive.
