UTM Slow Fashion Club (UTMSF) UTM

Our overall goal is to reduce the impacts of fast fashion by advocating, educating, and reducing the impact that has damaged the environment and the people involved. By creating events and activities that invite the UofT community to learn and engage with each other. Allowing for open conversations regarding fashion, business, and sustainability. Clothing is a thriving industry that is often overexploited due to the high demand for fast-growing trends. As a fast-paced industry, clothing is often overlooked and therefore prioritizes production volume over quality. Contributing to the world’s environment due to its overproduction, consumption, and discarding of clothing in a short period of time. With an emphasis on sustainability, slow fashion hopes to help reduce these global concerns, whether that be through consuming less or upcycling and repairing what we already have. Even within the manufacturing process, the demand for fast production often leads to sweatshops and can include child labor. We hope to have more educational panels, seminars, and invite guest speakers from different areas of fashion. This can be through organizations that demonstrate sustainability, ethics, and innovation, or educators from UofT to elaborate more on this matter.
