About the UTSU Food Bank:
The UTSU Food Bank aims to address food insecurity on campus by operating a free, year-round Food Bank open to all University of Toronto students in need of food. This service provides support for individual students and students with families.
For the Winter 2024 semester, starting the week of January 8th, the UTSU Food Bank will run every Friday at the Student Commons (230 College St, Room 136) from 11 am to 3 pm with food deliveries arriving on Wednesday and every second Thursday of the week of service.
Volunteer Opportunity:
- Food Bank Volunteers needed to join our Food Bank team
- Commitment for the winter term is 4 hours each week
- Volunteer support is needed during service weeks on the following days
- Wednesday: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
- Friday: 9:00am to 5:00 pm
- Onboarding and training will be provided
- Co-Curricular Record recognition will be provided upon the completion of winter 2023 volunteer hours
- Supervision and mentoring will be provided by the UTSU’s Programs & Services Food Bank Team

Key Volunteer Responsibilities and Role:
- Unloading deliveries of food and putting it away
- Lifting, sorting, and organizing food deliveries and donations
- Pre-packaging bags of food
- Assist with food bank service operation, including set-up, food distribution, and clean-up
- Check-in and register food bank users
- Some lifting, bending and moving (all items can be broken down to make this manageable)
- Will be standing for the most part
- Provide excellent customer service to food bank users
- Work as part of a team
- Maintain a safe, clean working environment and ensure that safe food handling practices are followed
- Provide a safe environment for food bank users in light of COVID-19
About You:
- You are a part-time or full-time student at the University of Toronto St. George Campus
- You have excellent customer service skills
- You are able to work within a team and possess effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- You can apply an equity and inclusion lens to understand the various issues that impact students
- Able to protect and maintain student confidentiality and privacy
The following qualifications are considered to be an asset:
- Possess safe food handling certification
- Experience with community service and engagement
