Given the scarcity of Shogi players in English-speaking regions, we are establishing a Shogi club at the University of Toronto with three bold objectives in mind. Firstly, we plan to organize events to promote Shogi, initially within the university and subsequently throughout the city of Toronto. Secondly, we aim to develop an English-language website catering to novice Shogi players, addressing the current language barrier posed by the availability of resources predominantly in Japanese. Thirdly, we intend to conduct AI research on Shogi, leveraging the computer science knowledge of our members to apply and demonstrate the skills learned in class. Our ultimate goal is to popularize Shogi through various platforms and to advance AI research by utilizing the knowledge and skills acquired at the university, thus bridging the gap between this rich traditional game and the global, English-speaking community.
