Thank you for volunteering your time, energy, and leadership to one of the many student organizations across U of T’s three campuses! Here are some things you can do in this section:
- Apply for student group recognition
- Renew student group recognition
- Edit student group information
- Post or edit an event
- Post or edit an opportunity
- Participate in a leadership program
Apply for Student Group Recognition
Being recognized by the University provides your student group with several privileges, including:
- being listed on the Student Organization Portal and being able to post events and opportunities on the site;
- use of University facilities and spaces at no cost or at a lower cost than external organizations;
- permission to use University of Toronto (or U of T), University of Toronto Mississauga (or UTM), or University of Toronto Scarborough (or UTSC) as part of your group’s name; and
- access to dedicated programs and services available to student leaders on your campus:
For these reasons, most student groups seek recognition from the University. Being a recognized student group requires that your group meets the requirements set out in the University’s Policy on the Recognition of Student Groups and Tri-Campus Guidelines on the Recognition of Student Groups at the time of its application and for the duration of its recognition.
APPLY FOR STUDENT GROUP RECOGNITION (NEW GROUPS ONLY)
Renew Student Group Recognition
When a student group is recognized by the University, that recognition remains in effect until July 31 of the following academic year.
Student groups that wish to renew their recognition should do so before July 31 in order to prevent any interruption to their free or discounted use of University facilities and meeting spaces and so they may continue to use the University’s name (if applicable). Continued maintenance of @studentorg.utoronto.ca email accounts and University web space, use of temporary office space, and access to other services and resources also require that groups renew their recognition in a timely manner.
RENEW STUDENT GROUP RECOGNITION (EXISTING GROUPS ONLY)
Edit Student Group Information
A student group’s Primary Contact can edit the group’s information by going to the group’s public profile page (which can be found in the groups listing) and following these steps:
- Click on the Group Leader Login button, then click on the Log in with UTORid/JOINid button, and then log in with your UTORid and password
- Once you’ve logged in, click on the Request Group Edit button
- Make your edits and click the Submit Update for Approval button at the bottom of the form
- The staff members on your campus will approve your edits – please be patient as this may take a some time, depending on the volume of applications and updates being process at the time
During the renewal period in the summer session (beginning March 15), the Request Group Edit button triggers the renewal process for the upcoming academic year.
If the Primary Contact listed on your group’s public profile page is no longer with the group, please provide the name, U of T email address (e.g., student.name@mail.utoronto.ca), and UTORid of the new Primary Contact to the staff members on your campus in order to regain access to your group.
Post or Edit an Event
In addition to your student group’s website and socials, the Student Organization Portal is a great place to promote your group’s events to existing members and maybe even attract some new members, looking to try something new.
Posting an Event
A student group’s Primary Contact can post an event on behalf of their recognized group by going to the group’s public profile page (which can be found in the groups listing) and following these steps:
- Click on the Group Leader Login button, then click on the Log in with UTORid/JOINid button, and then log in with your UTORid and password
- Once you’ve logged in, click on the Create Event button at the bottom of the page
- Enter the event information and click the Submit button at the bottom of the form
- The event should now appear in the events listing
Editing an Event
A student group’s Primary Contact can edit an event that they posted by going to the event’s page (which can be found in the events listing) and following these steps:
- Click on the Group Leader Login link on the top-right of the page (desktop) or the bottom of the page (desktop & mobile) to sign in with your UTORid and password
- Once you’ve logged in, click on the Edit Event button
- Make any edits and click the Submit button at the bottom of the form
Post or Edit an Opportunity
Unlike an event, an opportunity is an experience (paid or unpaid) that would typically offer a sustained level of commitment and/or involvement and would not usually be limited to a few hours. Examples of opportunities include:
- Calls for volunteers
- Auditions & try-outs
- Community service projects
- Creative submissions to journals & zines
- Call for nominations for executive positions
- Committee openings
- Mentorship programs
- Research opportunities
- International/study abroad programs
- Awards for undergraduate and graduate students
Posting an Opportunity
A student group’s Primary Contact can post an event on behalf of their recognized group by going to the group’s public profile page (which can be found in the groups listing) and following these steps:
- Click on the Group Leader Login button, then click on the Log in with UTORid/JOINid button, and then log in with your UTORid and password
- Once you’ve logged in, click on the Create Opportunity button at the bottom of the page
- Enter the opportunity information and click the Submit button at the bottom of the form
- The opportunity should now appear in the opportunities listing
Editing an Opportunity
A student group’s Primary Contact can edit an event that they posted by going to the opportunity’s page (which can be found in the opportunities listing) and following these steps:
- Click on the Group Leader Login button, then click on the Log in with UTORid/JOINid button, and then log in with your UTORid and password
- Once you’ve logged in, click on the Edit Opportunity button
- Make any edits and click the Submit button at the bottom of the form

Whether this is your first year as a student leader or you’ve been involved for a few years, there’s always something new to learn! Each campus offers a suite of learning opportunities, tailored for student group leaders interested in developing their leadership skills:
