The purpose of UTCDC is to provide students with a tight-knit community and a platform to express different opinions on local and global issues. We aim to raise students’ consciousness, generate critical thinking, develop communication and public speaking skills.
UTCDC routinely hold workshops, training, and competitions for students throughout the academic year. Students can take these opportunities to learn how to research and formulate arguments to support a stance in a debate competition.
In the previous year, we have been collaborating with the University of Waterloo Cantonese Debate and Culture Society (UWCDCS), the Chinese Perspectives (Cantonese) at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Ottawa Hong Kong Cultural Association (UOHKCA) and the University of London on several debate competitions, allowing students to share their views and make connections with the judges and professionals.
UTCDC regularly hold innovative and unique social activities to encourage students to immerse themselves in Cantonese Culture. We are experimenting with different formats to promote Cantonese Culture and unite Cantonese speakers (Students from Hong Kong, Macau, Southern China and many diasporas and people who are interested in Cantonese around the world) across different provinces and territories in Canada, such as Cantonese Class, and more.
